Two words, Colony Trap! My favorite muskrat trap has to be the colony style. I have one made from Lobster trap mesh! The rubber coating ensures a LIFETIME of use! They also use a small nylon mesh bait bag just like a lobster trap but smaller of coarse! Use a sliced, or chunks of apple in the bag, tie it off so it hangs inside the trap. I set mine in a smaller shallower (1ft - 2ft) brook or stream under the water fully. I've seen 3-5 muskrat at once piled in the trap! The set will look like so: IMG Resource TrapperMan.com My recommendation is to some how stake it in/down so the rat doesn't flip the trap and open the doors to escape. I have also seen these traps set in deeper ponds with floats on the sides to let the trap meander around with the current possibly bringing your chances up. Best bet is to tie a longer rope or twine to it for easy retrieving.
